I. SUMMARY
The Physician is a member of the clinical/medical services staff with clinical/credential approval in identified practice areas. Responsible for the provision of comprehensive primary health care, with a focus on general family practice that may include general medicine, pediatrics, adult, and/or maternal care. Examines and diagnosis condition of patients utilizing appropriate referral to ancillary services such as laboratory, x-ray/imaging and other necessary diagnostic tools. Involved in significant preventive care and AHC health promotion and patient education activity. Assists and coordinates with nursing and support staff as appropriate to established patient flow processes and standing orders. Will also assist with in-service training of nursing and general staff as needed to maintain a high level of clinical service excellence in quality, as well as take a lead role in health promotion and prevention initiatives. The Physician is an active member of a Performance Improvement (PI) Team.
II. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
A. Assures that:
- The basic provision of patient general primary medical care services include the following:
- Preventive general medicine
- Diagnosis and treatment relating to general medicine, pediatrics, adult, and maternal primary medical care
- Assurance in the coordinated availability of quality ancillary services consistent with continuity in medical care services
- Assurance for emergency care or hospitalization referral availability and follow-up
- The coordinated use of laboratory, pharmacy, radiology, specialist for the support of examination on patients, and for the overall evaluation, care, and treatment of medical illness, injuries, diseases, or other conditions.
- Referral and follow-up ancillary and clinical specialty support are in accordance with approved Clinic protocols.
- Patient education and counseling on the prevention and treatment of disease, illness or injury are provided.
- Contributes to maintaining clinical protocols contained in the Scope of Practice Reference Policy and Procedure Manuals
B. Responsible for:
- Providing primary health/medical care.
- Providing general health promotion and prevention, primarily but not mutually exclusive to direct patient education.
- Assist the Medical Director and Director of Clinical Operations in providing professional health/medical direction and expression to the organization’s philosophical concepts, mission, and strategic health/clinical care plans.
- Assisting in the development and implementation of approved medical policies, protocols, and procedures with the other professional staff, to ensure the delivery of quality patient care.
- Participating in clinic continuing education, on the job training, and orientation of clinicians and other general clinic and social services staff to advance the treatment/care of patients.
- Participating in professional peer review, performance improvement, and other designated AHC Committees to ensure the delivery of quality care.
- Performs duties in accordance with quality standards of the medical profession, the Medicare/Medicaid or private insurance conditions of participation, and other applicable accrediting standards.
- Providing emergency continuity of care to Clinic patients after hours in accordance with established protocols and procedures.
- Communicates in a professional and courteous manner with AHC staff, patients, visitors and others on the premises.
- Remaining flexible in the provision of the medical care of pediatric, adolescent, and adult patients consistent with level of training.
- Oversight of midlevel providers.
- Performs other duties as may be assigned.
III. EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
- Must possess current and unrestricted license granted by the Texas State Medical Board to practice as a Medical Doctor.
- Graduate of an approved accredited health professional school.
- Preferred ability to communicate in English/Spanish.
- Must meet any and all government and third-party clinical requirement.
IV. WORK ENVIRONMENT
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee may lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
May be exposed to chemical, mechanical, electrical, radiation, biological hazards, moderate risk with exposure to contagious diseases, and on occasion, uncooperative hostile patients.
V. LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to effectively and persuasively present information and respond to questions from top management, public groups, and/or board of directors, and the general public.
VI. CLIENT AND CROSS-CULTURAL SUPPORT SKILLS
Awareness and experience with non-profit environment particularly in service to socio-economic and medically undeserved populations. Sensitivity too, and willingness to work and learn cultural and language differences/diversity in service delivery.
VII. MISCELLANEOUS
Must comply with the Clinic's policies and procedures regarding immunization, personnel, infection control, safety, confidentiality, drug free workplace, sexual harassment free workplace environment, no-smoking, and other AHC policies/standards of conduct.
